A XC LANDING SITE SELECTION AND PLANNING TOOL: LANDOUT Ver. 2.0

Produced by: CH ENGINEERING, Carl D. Herold

A Commercial Glider Pilot with over 200,000 miles of Glider XC, Competition, and National Record Flying Experience

Announcing a new CD which contains information for assisting the glider pilot in planning the selection and planning of Glider Landing Sites throughout 12 Western States. With the assistance of XC experienced glider pilots, this project was started three years ago. This project is planned to be a continuing work in progress, with updates provided as the data is developed. There is as much emphasis on places `Not To Land' at as well as candidate `Places To Land' your glider with spans ranging from 13 meters (43 ft) to over 31 meters (102 Ft) wing span.

The EXCEL and TXT formatted database is sorted by span obstacle width. As a XC glider pilot you will be able to plan and select from the database, the safe wing span clearance margins you prefer for you and your glider to land depart and land safely. All landing sites with less than 120 foot obstacle clearance have been visited and tape measured on the ground by CH ENGINEERING. For the time being, this CD is dedicated to safe places to land your glider, not necessarily for easy ground retrieves.   This type of notation will be in the notes column on the EXCEL spread sheet.

This first edition, `Version 2.0' CD covers assessed span obstacle width glider landing sites: the N / M data represent the number of assessed candidate No Land Sites (N) and the Land Sites (M) in the 12 western states (175/762).

The LANDOUT Ver. 2.0 database is comprised of:

The candidate places to land have assessed obstacle widths exceeding 50 feet or more. You get to decide if you want your wings to land and take off over runway lights. You will know whether the candidate landing site is hard surface or turf, gravel, dirt, etc. The non-landable candidates include Class B airspace, Military only, Restricted Areas, and un-landable. The un-landable site assessments includes too narrow, to rough, abandoned, overgrown, hazards, bad approaches, exceeding 4% grade, of high density altitude, plowed under, legal hassles, and etc. These sites include dry lakes, usable abandoned airports, and non-seasonal landing areas.  A total of 46 abandoned airports, 91 Dry Lakes, and 259 undesignated landing sites are assessed as Ns and Ms.

At the present time there are an additional I have another 2300 landing sites to assess.
