Alpha's field a,Q,Z,R,T,g,S,V,G 37 42 57 N 79 50 19 W or 37 42.950 N 79 50.317 W 960 l A landed here twice in one contest. The second time, the farmer locked the gate on him. It took an hour of schmoozing to get the glider out of the field.
Angry Farmer a,Q,Z,R,T,g,S,V,G 37 41 06 N 79 48 44 W or 37 41.100 N 79 48.733 W 944 l Yes, I have landed in the Angry Farmer's field. Bruce Kristof and I went after a cloud at Eagle Rock that was faking it, and before we knew it we were in the dirt. These are still some of the best fields around. It would do us a lot of good to try to *not* use them.
Boomerrang field a,Q,Z,R,T,g,S,V,G 37 31 00 N 79 42 14 W or 37 31.000 N 79 42.233 W 839 l I landed out here coming home from a Boomerrang mission to Waynesboro that I flew with Dave and Dirk. I got away, but not all the way home. They end up stuck at Waynesboro. I'm not sure whose retrieve was shorter.
Bruce Kristof a,Q,Z,R,T,g,S,V,G 37 27 15 N 80 11 14 W or 37 27.250 N 80 11.233 W 2540 l Bruce went "au vache" here once. That is French for landout, and literally means "to the cows." Yes, I think there were cows in the field.
Charlie a,Q,Z,R,T,g,S,V,G 37 26 32 N 80 13 48 W or 37 26.533 N 80 13.800 W 2524 l Shuffler
Contest landout a,Q,Z,R,T,g,S,V,G 37 19 41 N 80 15 30 W or 37 19.683 N 80 15.500 W 2187 l Once in college, when I was driving to the field during the contest, I saw a pilot in this field. I gave him a ride back and he self retrieved. I looked at the field Memorial Day weekend, and would find somewhere else to land.
Craig Co. High School a,Q,Z,R,T,g,S,V,G 37 30 50 N 80 05 08 W or 37 30.833 N 80 05.133 W 1249 l I have landed in this field several times when coming home from Oriskany and just didn't have enough to make it. I looked at the field on the SE side (runway 4-22) and I would probably choose it over the field that the pin is in.
Creek - Green Valley Rd a,Q,Z,R,T,g,S,V,G 37 16 09 N 80 41 45 W or 37 16.150 N 80 41.750 W 1685 l 537 Green Valley Rd, Pearisburg, VA 24134
Dirk Elber a,Q,Z,R,T,g,S,V,G 37 28 38 N 80 16 50 W or 37 28.633 N 80 16.833 W 1731 l Dirk landed here once. It didn't work out well. His first choice was the field on the other side of the road, but as he turned base he could see the saplings for the trees you now see in the photo. He quickly opted for this field. With the poor setup for the approach, he botched the touchdown and broke his glider. The field may actually be a good one, and others have landed here.
Dirk's other field a,Q,Z,R,T,g,S,V,G 37 30 33 N 80 10 38 W or 37 30.550 N 80 10.633 W 1605 l Dirk landed out here once.

Farmer's field a,Q,Z,R,T,g,S,V,G 37 33 42 N 80 00 13 W or 37 33.700 N 80 00.217 W 1170 l This was an OK field. I used the phone in the trailer at the end of the road.
Farm a,Q,Z,R,T,g,S,V,G 37 21 46 N 80 23 45 W or 37 21.767 N 80 23.750 W 2218 l I landed here once when we had a 7 kt climb to 7 or 8k and thought the day was unbeatable. We were fooled since that was the only lift around for miles. I got low first and landed here maybe 40 minutes into the flight. It's a good field. The approach is from the East to the West, uphill.
George Moore's a,Q,Z,R,A,T,F,g,S,V,v,N,G 37 31 21 N 79 51 09 W or 37 31.350 N 79 51.150 W 1026 l VA83 3039 11/29 110 150 G I think this is George Moore's field. Ask Lanier about it.
Glen Wilton a,Q,Z,R,A,T,F,g,S,V,v,N,G 37 44 33 N 79 48 59 W or 37 44.550 N 79 48.983 W 1011 l 44VA 2800 03/21 30 100 G Early in my career, I landed out in one of the field near Glen Wilton. I would have rather landed at Big Hill. The last 300' of altitude did absolutely nothing for me.

L-33 Solo field a,Q,Z,R,T,g,S,V,G 37 30 22 N 80 10 05 W or 37 30.367 N 80 10.083 W 1548 l I landed here once in an L-33 Solo. No I was not going cross country. Rather, I turned around half way to Maggie (that's 7 mi out) at +6000 ft. With a mandate to not fly cross country, I tried to come 'straight home' which made me fly through sink. I was at a critical point where I might have been able to fly through the Johns Creek gap to get to NCI, but didn't since I couldn't see the airport I thought it safer to land in this field. A very good and safe choice. The lesson: you can even landout when you are in good shape and have no intention of doing so; sometimes it's safer to do so.

Late getting home a,Q,Z,R,T,g,S,V,G 38 10 34 N 79 44 17 W or 38 10.567 N 79 44.283 W 1982 l I landed out up here once on a day with 10 kt lift to 8k and ridge. I really screwed the pooch and was late for an appointment. Doh! This may be the field or one down the road. All I remember is waiting that the intersection just south for ever. Dirk and I stopped at the Pizza Hut in Covington for dinner. We saw someone with a soaring t-shirt. They were Frank Reid's (of Bermuda High Soaring) in-laws.
LOL field a,Q,Z,R,T,g,S,V,G 37 25 50 N 80 32 46 W or 37 25.833 N 80 32.767 W 2572 l Wires midfield. Lol, because it's only one of two potentially usable fields in the sea of woods that is Jefferson National Forrest.

I always remember the tree in the middle of it (which looks smaller than I remember). The field doesn't look great in this photo, and when I looked at it on Memorial Day weekend I thought I might choose something else. There are several good fields in the area to choose from.
